Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley formed a “Marmot Club” in Alaska’s Juneau Icefield in 1971 — members had to climb with another Marmot, and everyone was President. Founded by three Californian skiers, Hot Chillys introduced the body-fit base layer in 1986. Hot Chilly’s still aims to keep people warm, dry, comfortable, and outside—their Moisture Transfer Fiber fabric for kids products has odor blocking anti-microbial treatment, ultraviolet protection, flat seams, and a super soft finish.

In 1966 San Francisco, outdoor enthusiasm was getting competitive—but climbers had heavy army surplus equipment. Doug and Susie Tompkins opened a shop to offer the latest and lightest stuff, and a place to hang out. The opening was a blast, with a popular local band… the band was the Grateful Dead, and the shop was The North Face. Today, TNF uses feedback from their athletes and explorers to keep refining performance apparel.
